Dreams came through!
Megatarod
-a meeting with the elements at its best!
Sometimes even romantic, dog sledding
through Swedish Lapland is an exotic
and at times challenging experience.
12 nights in tent/tipi (tentipi), the good mood
of fellow travelers who took it all in their stride.
We didn’t want the tour to end,
it could just have gone on!
The planning of Mega 2009 has started
and I hope to see you all back.

MINITAROD and
Husky Special
We run Husky Special parallel with Minitarod
this year. Phil from Australia and Marcus
from Germany enjoyed a long week of good
dogsledding in our local area while Alice from UK
and Sarah from Australia joined Jenny and Hannes
on the 10 day expedition Minitarod.
It is somehow hard to reach into those who
have bonded on an experience like the Minitarod,
which they didn’t want to end ; the guests did
apparently attempt to sabotage the return.
The dogs are more communicative-they say it did
us a world of good to be out on a long tour,
but are now glad to be back in their straw huts.

But this week it was all about caring
for the dogs, long sled rides, puppy walks,
northern lights and no pike.

Week 06-Husky Special Review
Hello Kim and Bergsvein,
Hannas, Jenny and Sten.
I'm back at work today (Tuesday), having taken
yesterday off to go to the woods with my own dog,
the weather was too nice to sit in an office!
Even though I'm looking at this world around me,
in my mind's eye all I see is snow and
"my" team in front of me.
Thank you for a wonderful trip.
It was so unforgettable. I haven't stopped
talking about it to anyone who will listen!
I have to say I enjoyed every minute - even
the seconds with a tree looming ahead while...

Mit dem Winter kam der Matti
Am 3.November wurde mein Neffe Matti, 4390g/54cm, geboren.....
...and our 3 autumn guests arrived in a snow covered
Munken. The Puppies loved their first deep snow
walks and we had our first dog training on sleds.
Proper minus degrees laid an ice crystal cover over
the landscape and the warm sun light followed us
on our training tours. Horse slay instead of carriage
and riding trips with the horses accomplished our days.
Thank you Manu, Susi and Daniela
for a wonderful week.

Autumn Holiday Report
Pure air, autumn impressions. Mist covered fields,
silence broken by the playful growls of 4 pups playing.
Their mummy June slowly loosens the bond
and trains together with her fellow huskies on long
runs every day.
Yesterday 4 people left us with lots of inspiration,
red cheeks and many steps closer to nature.
We trained and cared for the dogs, took trips
with horse and carriage, went on a moutain walk and
daily puppy walks, threw axes and chopped wood,
camped in the forest with a full moon and northern
lights and had lots of good fires, a good smell of
smoke and lots of good food.
Thank you Gina and Stewart for coming back,
thank you Maurice and Emma
for chasing away all the bears.

Autumn Work
Husky training-now pulling up to 20 kilometers
like 4-5 days a week-prepare the dogs and us for
a long and hard winter under the northern stars.
Our newcomers, Alta and Yukon, prove fine
in team and seem to have the stamina.
Junes puppies are now 5 weeks, very cute and active.
Obelix, Omega, Ophir and Odin goes with for walks
down to the horse field daily. Each one an individual
of very different characters and build.
It seems like Construction work is a never ending
story here. We have now taken step 2 in the process
of doing up what we call “the flat next door”.
If it is not all done by the time snow covers our land
the work will not run away, and we can continue
when the daffodils come out again.
We made a Fish and Meat Smoke-or rather;
Johannes did. He also caught the fish (abbor and pike)
which he salted and smoked. We look forward to
extending our fishing fun to also include smoking
the fish you catch while you are here, you might even
want to take some cured fish home with you?

What did we do this week?
Gave the dogs some excellent training runs.
Played with the puppies. Built a new shelter for
harnesses, lines and other dog-driving equipment next
to the new dog yeard. Started a major undertaking:
Pulled out the floor and started lifting the house
which is to be new living quarters----for us.
Went to visit Peggy and Thorsten at Norrlands Snoetroll, joined Thorsten on a training round with a
impressive row of 27 dogs in front of the car-and we
ended up bringing with us Alta and Yukon home.
More about the new-comers to follow when they
have been on next week’s training runs with our dogs.

Prince of Winter
Prince of Winter paid us a short visit on Monday.
A promising sign for the winter, but wet snow
in September does not give us any less mud
to run training trips in. Nevertheless it was fun
to throw some snow balls.
The autumn colours are mother natures
greatest expression of beauty.
The evenings peaceful travel through Munkflöhögens
countryside in the horse carriage is a contrast to the
quad-bike trips with the huskies in the mornings.

Puppies!
Congratulations June-welcome to the O-litter.
June gave birth to 4 puppies on September 1st.
They are just like all other puppies;
the most beautiful ones ever.
June is a very nice 3 year old daughter of Davies
and Hamlet. The pups father is Pojk.
The 2 puppy boys are big, one of the girls
is on the small side, but with only four in the litter
there is every chance that they will be well fed
and looked after by the proud mother.
Pups grow fast, and will give us and our guests lots
of pleasure in the months to come. We will come
with regular updates on growth and development.

Sleddog Training Starts Now
Yes- we are on the go with training. The Rhino from
Yamaha is big news around these paths.
Sleddog conditioning with a level of comfort and
overview for passengers surpasses any traditional
quad bike. But ok the job does in any case have
to be done with the greatest attention to details
and even perfection.
Our Alaskan huskies are madly excited, go go go go!
We hope to be able to run daily training runs
for most dogs. We should just about
make it with 3 runs with 18 dogs in each team.
Happy huskies love running!

Between Seasons
What happens at Husky Holiday
between seasons?
Huskies are resting - dreaming of autumn training and
how they in a few months will be stretching out
across white wilderness towing us on sleds.
The farm is in summer more like a construction site. Roads and tracks are being made, tipis and shelters are popping up - our new wilderness camp will make it fun to spend as much time as possible enjoying the
outdoors here. The Single Malt Rondavel
is in place for a moment of escape.
Our camp is being built revolving around the fire, with many fireplaces, the brightness of the flames; that what gives calm in soul and warm hands, the fire is as a way of living when on a husky trip with us.
We play and work, making every effort to live while
we are at it. Kim and I welcome you to be a part of the life at Husky Holiday autumn and winter season.
Take care

15th April 2007 - Summary
The Mushing Autumn and Winter 2006 / 2007 has come to a close.
We have never had a better winter! Each week feels like a highlight of the season -
we were blessed with great guests - good snow - fantastic huskies.
Having run sleds on snow from 17th October 2006 we have of course had some days where it
was too mild, or icy or biting cold but all that has been part of a snowy winter that is
incomparable with any in the past. For someone fearing global heating causing problems
for the operation we are most happy to have presented the one cold and snowy week
after the other.
Our local helpers Sten, Lasse and Jenny have with their unstoppable willingness contributed
in making guests feel welcome and cared for, as well as making sure our trails were best
possible at any time.
Heaps of sausages and bread, bacon and fish fingers have been enjoyed around the fire.
We have had an occasional whisky or beer to go with Kims gastronomic feasts at night.
We have given our guests the opportunity to take part in the many tasks connected with caring
for the dogs. Most people have managed fine with feeding dogs after closing the nose with a
cloths peg: Haralds meat/tripe/fish mix does apparently stink. We have maybe done less skiing,
tobogganing and other winter activities than former years, rather concentrated on the Mushing;
The Autumn training was special with more snow than one even in ones wildest imagination
could dream of. The 4 weeks in mountains Funesdalen was actually rejuvenating for all of us,
the weeks at Munken were varied and good, our Minitarod was an outstanding experience.
Having 2 cabins available for extra weeks for those choosing to lengthen their stay,
have for some been the icing on the cake.
www.husky-holiday.com will be renewed and updated over the next months, but not with
the weekly regularity from the winter. The training blog should be running from September.
About next years program: The Easter special and the Megatarod, the mountain experience
of Funesdalen will all be presented in the course of the next weeks.
Thank you to the many who have kept reading the website-a special greeting to
a single malt friend in Newcastle; thank you for reading every weeks update.
Thank you everyone for contributing with loads of photos, we have more than 20.000 to
choose from and Mark from Cape Town is busy editing a Husky Holiday film,
it will be on the homepage in a little while.
We have, as previously mentioned, had some great people here; you seem to have enjoyed our
company-you did especially like the huskies. They are the greatest animals in the world and I can
promise you that we and the dogs will be very happy to see you back next season.
New litters of puppies are on the go. If everything goes as it should Nikita will be mummy at the
beginning of June, it is that Pluto again. And it wouldn't surprise me if he took a stroll in amongst
the bitches in season again.
What have we learnt from this year: Our guests need to have a reasonable balance and not
be unfit to drive a dog sled. We have learnt that we will have a battle trying to make the place
a nikotin free environment. Smokers do turn up, we would like to see them back again,
we hope they have given up smoking by next time.
We will spend the months to come preparing for new adventures
which we hope you can take part in.
Thank you very much-Tack så mycket-Vielen Dank-Tusen Takk-
to all of you who have come here making these holidays to the fantastic experience
only those who have tried can know about.

Week 15 - Husky Special
Spring is next.
A multi national week where our guests from Spain,
Germany, France, Belgium, Australia and Ireland
have contributed to the final party of the season.
Weather was kind to us, enabling us to do our daily
dogsled runs-including training the puppies from last
year. The new Husky Holiday world fishing record
was a pike of 4.05 kilos, the proud trap setter was
Niamh from Ireland, who by the way has just spent
her second week here this winter, and dog sledding
seem to be involved in her future plans.
Some get hooked.

Week 14 - Husky Special
It is our last night in Munkflohogen after a week
which, unfortunately, had to end sometime. As I write,
the stars are glistening in the sky, the land lies silent
under its blanket of snow, and the dogs are singing.
The memories of those dogs and this magical place
will live long in our minds, and even longer in our
hearts. Memories of gliding through fields and forest,
with only the soft sound of padding paws on snow,
opening the door to a world we never knew existed.
To have even briefly experienced this world one
can only feel privileged.
To stand on the back of a sled watching these
wonderful animals do what they do best is pure joy.
To have spent time with those same animals, feeding
them, playing with them, and discovering their
individual characters has been akin to making new
best friends.
Speaking of characters, what can I say about
our hosts? Bergsvein with his wonderful stories
(bring plenty of salt) and his relaxed, yet practical
approach would put even the most nervous newcomer
at ease immediately. The efficient and hard-working
Kim can only be held in admiration. Her cooking was
something to look forward to every day as one neared
the end of the track. To have been brought ice-fishing
and pike trapping with Sten was just the icing on
this cake.
The week was made so enjoyable by these great
people, by the amazing dogs, and by the ever-reliable
combination of Scotch-Irish. An unforgettable week
was had by Marie, Alastair, Jim, Seamus,
Suzanne and John.

What Minitarod was like:
|
 |
My most captivating outdoor experience, being one with the dogs
is what it’s all about. First they were merely an instrument,
but in the end I loved them all.
Peter van den Broek, the Netherlands.
|
 |
Only the dogs can tell us how hard the adventure was by the look
of their faces at the end of each run. I came for experience and
that is exactly what I got. The most thrilling time in my life so far.
Maria Hamilton, Scotland.
|
 |
Just you, your team and silence against elements-amazing.
Gwen Trott, England.
|
 |
This is my second tour over two years and by far the best.
The hospitality has not diminished and added to this was the ten day dog driving and camping. The conditions on tour changed
each day, bringing new opportunities and challenges.
Added to this was the scenery and isolation all combining
to give an unforgettable experience.
Stephen Bryan, Wexford, Ireland
|
 |
This tour was just fantastic. We had hard work and often
experienced discomfort-sleeping in tents for days on end in winter
Sweden is not an easy experience. We worked 14+ hours days-
driving our sleds and dog teams in all types of snow and weather
conditions, making and breaking camp, collecting firewood, water,
preparing and cooking food for humans and animals-but we also
experienced beautiful scenery, overcame numerous challenges,
got to know and love our dogs and seven strangers became great friends.
Malcolm Currie, England
|
 |
It was easier than I thought. It was what I looked for.
It was being now, this moment, nothing else.
Alexandra Paul, Spain/Germany.
|
 |
50 huskies and a fair bit of struggle was the recipe for bringing
us together, not to forget the whisky nights.
With Peter the Multipurpose outdoorer, Maria the Dog feeder,
Gwen the orderly Morning bird, the Singing Irish man Stephen,
the solid Worker Malcolm, the tour Saviour Alexandra being
our Vet-Doctor-Nurse-Cook; it was an easy task to be
the tour leader, but I also learnt a lot. About people.
The experience of 6 very interested single travellers
forming the group was perfect.
The good mood and the willingness to make compromises to
overcome difficulties was strength of the group. I could hardly
imagine a better tour than our Minitarod even though the question
of Megatarod was brought to my attention as an option for 2008.
We will be revising next year’s program to make space
for 2 “big tours”.
Thank you. See you.

Hope for Me ?
On the last day of this week’s tour I had young
Ben (8) as passenger on my sled. As we were
cruising down the hills on the last run he said to me:
-You know Bergsvein; In England there is a
program on TV called Ten Years Younger,
and there was this man that had a long beard
like you, and long hair just like you.
And you know what they did? They cut his hair
and shaved his beard off and he looked very
nice and it is really true it made him look
10 years younger!
It left me with more amusement than hope.
And reminded me why I think kid’s weeks are fun.
The photos say more than 1000 words.

Ellen said her team of huskies dragged her straight into

as well as testing his new Nikon D200. I hope their
new house will not stop them from retuning to
Munken and Husky Holiday. Maybe Extreme Cat
Stroking will be on next year’s program?
Sally enjoyed Lenas massage-does one good.
Andrew impressed with his cross country ski trips.
This time they brought their friends Pat and Chris along.
Pat talked, dished out shortbread, but was quiet
when she fell off the sled.
Chris was able to help Kim learning to play the guitar.
They just sent us a nice mail on their return back home:
Dear Kim and Bergsvein
Thank you for sharing with us a lifestyle of which
we had no idea. It was a pleasure and a unique
experience for us and we feel very fortunate
to have met you both and of course all the wonderful dogs and horses. We have re-lived

best wishes to you both and hope to meet again
either in Sweden or visit us in Scotland.

Week 5 - Husky Special
Aggie & Chris from Manchester and Steve & Kim
from Oxford were the UK representatives on
this weeks Husky Special.
From far away South Africa came Nicky & Wynand and then our first Scandinavian; Sören from Denmark.
We had enough challenges (holes to fall into) to have
excitement over the evening dinner; they got to sleep
out in -17, oh sorry -18, and then the great
experience of meeting the overflow on the lake.
That’s water floating on top of the ice covered lake,
but hidden under the snow. Scary, maybe,
but brought along new wisdom.
At Husky Holiday we can only thank you very much
for great participation and hope you will come back
for more.

Week 3 - Husky Special
Thank you, Pat and Jenny for a
wonderful and inspiring week.
Being used to driving horse carriages full speed on
highly trafficated roads they took over the team
of six wild huskies at ease. Heavy snowfalls and
stormy days made us feel very small in Mother
Nature’s hands, but the dogs were in their element
and took us through amazing scenery. Horse sled tours
rounded off the perfection of this week and we finished
off with a good taste of goat cheese and crackers.

Week 52 - Christmas Mushing
This week has been an amazing experience
for all of us. We all learnt something new and different,
even for those seasoned huskey drivers amongst us!!
Despite the recent warm weather that has fustrated
alot of keen outdoor enthusiasts, we all managed to
get four magnificent days of dog driving and the cross
country skiing is a must, the ice fishing is definitely
for those who seek peace and quiet (hey Kim!).
The excellent hospitality offered Bergsvein and Kim
is second to none, the food was incredibly good, with
a hearty breakfast, the camp fire lunch in the tipee
and the scandinavian (with a hint of german)
cuisine to finish off a excellent day.
The many highlights of the week for all of us would be the ice fishing (where we caught one big
pike (caught by Stephanei) which we then ate the
next day between seven of us and still had left overs
(for the chickens :p), the second highlight would be
driving the dogs out to a lake and made a nice warm
fire where we cooked bacon, meatballs, sausages
and a variety of warm bread.
Hopefully our wonderful adventures with Huskey Holidays will have tempted you likewise and for those
already commited, you'll be guaranteed an out of
this world experience.
